This note addresses a common and seemingly harmless decision: the candidate abutment tooth for a partial denture carries an old crown that looks sound, and the patient has been happy with it for years. Leaving that crown untouched lowers the cost of treatment — but it simultaneously puts four decisive variables beyond evaluation: ferrule, the underlying dentin structure, the cement seal, and the ability to shape rest seats and guide planes.
